I recently tried to get a group together for a life drawing class (semi-clothed) in the small coastal town where I live. It proved to be more difficult than I anticipated – we had quite a few people who had added their name to the list in advance, however only 2 turned up to draw on the night. I spoke to one of the pre-registered attendees who did manage to get there later in the night though once the session was over. I found that they felt a little intimidated because they “can’t draw”. I understood, then wondered how many other would-be life drawers felt the same way and never got themselves along to a class due to intimidation and fear. I think there are many. It’s unfortunate though because obviously in this case, it was something this person wanted to do. My response to the “I can’t draw” by the way was “Of course you can draw – everyone can draw” then I ventured into a conversation about learning to observe etc. which piqued their interest. I’m now trying to make up my mind as to wether I try and organise another session specifically designed for beginners, so they don’t feel out of place – my concern is that I wanted to organise a session so I could draw myself – which I don’t think will happen if I spend 2 hours helping others.
I did however type up some notes for beginners because I knew there would be 1 or 2 – so why not share them with our subscribers!
These were typed specifically for my beginners to refer to at the life drawing class I organised – I have expressed my own opinions and ways of drawing the figure. You might get only 1 or 2 tips, you might get more!
